TOCANI

TOCANI (Sower)
CCU Tlatelolco. Satélite project. 2016.

toca: to sow corn, beans or similar seeds. toca, nite: to bury somebody. tocani: from nahuatl: Sower.

Mapping conveys a graphic and symbolic scale of values within a territory. This is done from a multidimensional (spherical) perspective of space translated into a graphic (bidimensional) code. Mapping the inhabited space represents apprehending the world in symbolic, cultural and geopolitical terms.

The Centro Cultural Tlatelolco (CCUT) stands on what was once the island of Tlatelolco, where the homonymous prehispanic city was located. It is considered the epicenter of Mexican culture and stage of three categorical events in the history of the country: the defeat of Cuauhtémoc (which represents, by itself, the birth of Mexico), the students slaughter of 1968 and the earthquake of 1985. They all happened in Tlatelolco’s 3rd section, within the area where the CCUT, the pre-Hispanic ruins, the Iglesia de Santiago, the Tres Culturas (Three Cultures) square and the Tecpan building are located. This is considered the symbolic center of the housing complex designed by architect Mario Pani and is representative of Mexican utopia around the idea of modernity and middle class. Several cultural institutions of Mexico participate in its preservation; they are responsible of much of the cultural structure of Mexico.

This project developed like this: attendees were provided with a map of the site and an out of circulation 50 cent coin (which contains on one of its faces the image of Cuauhtémoc). They were asked to hide or bury the coin somewhere in the area comprising the CCUT, the prehispanic ruins, the Iglesia de Santiago, the Tres Culturas Square and the Tecpan and mark an X on their map. Then, they had to return to the starting point and mark the site where they carried out the action on a map located in one of the outer walls of the CCUT.

I intended to connect the cultural and symbolic space from a metaphorical relation, taking as starting point the CCU Tlatelolco, a construction, such as Mexico City and the nation itself, that was built over historic ruins. From its many falls, Tlatelolco relates the destruction and rebuilding of the nation and the construction of a common identity.
